Creating a Classic Vintage Look
Q&A with Tiea Whitaker, Founder of Shopaholic City
HOW DO YOU PULL VINTAGE PIECES FOR YOUR SHOP?
When searching for vintage pieces I am extremely selective. I go for quality over quantity, fun prints and patterns that are unique, and I look for pieces that have a modern edge to them. I want to make sure the vintage pieces I select speak to the era in which they represent, while fitting into today's fashion trends.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR? WHAT VINTAGE STYLISTS DO YOU ADMIRE?
It is a goal of mine to create my own platform, thus I aspire to be as original and creative as possible. I want to brand Shopaholic City as a household name. I admire the work of Annabel Tollman and Khalilah Williams-Webb. And I frequent Etsy, Raleigh Vintage, and Pinterest for inspiration.
As an all-around stylist, I specialize in pulling together looks that can incorporate vintage, consignment and every day fashions.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT VINTAGE AND MODERN PIECES TO PAIR?
For me, I drive off what speaks to my personal style. I love pieces that are unique, vibrant and chic. I may take a vintage jumpsuit and grab my favorite jewelry items from H&M and pair it with a Chanel Clutch. That way I'm paying homage to the past and the present.
WHAT ARE YOUR PREFERENCES OR YOUR RULE OF THUMB WHEN IT COMES TO HOW MANY OR HOW TO PAIR PIECES?
My rule of thumb is "build off what speaks to your personal style". Fashion is a way to express individuality and make a statement of your own. I would encourage others to be different when selecting pieces. Have fun with prints, colors and fabrics. Sometimes, you can take vintage item, a dress for example, and pair it with modern accessories such as a hot clutch and fabulous pumps. Don't focus too much on how many pieces rather what piece can be the base for your desired look.
HOW DO YOU SUGGEST PEOPLE ROAM THE RACKS WHEN SHOPPING? WHAT ARE MUST-HAVE VINTAGE PIECES THAT ARE CURRENTLY TRENDING?
Have fun when shopping and carve out time, remember you are looking to find a gem at a bargain price. Never be in a rush, fashion takes time.
When creating your vintage collection it's a good idea to have a statement vintage bag, a go to dress, and a pair of vintage shoes according to the current season.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE VINTAGE?
I define vintage as classic pieces that will always be relevant in fashion. Some trends never die they just get better with time.
